2nd Blog
One detail in The Book Thief that stood out to me was the setting of the book. This book was set in the time during the Holocaust which was a time known for brutal treatment towards Jewish people. Hearing about all of the horrible actions that were mentioned in the book like making people walk through the freezing cold snow, most without a pair of shoes. I think that the treatment was just downright cruel and no human should be treated that way because of their religion or their lifestyle. It's honestly so demeaning to know that the world was once in such bad shape with crematoriums and gas chambers. I know that the book is not directly focused on the Holocaust but it is a crucial detail for the setting and pops up here and there. Hearing about how everyone was shoved into trains and people being buried in towns they've never even heard of just sounds downright evil. I guess that was the whole idea behind the Holocaust, I mean, how much more evil could it get? The song I chose to represent this blog post is the song "Human" by Christina Perri. It basically explains that we're all just human and we can't change who we are. Being tortured because you're a Jew is so heartbreaking because they couldn't change who they were or what they believed in, it was how they were raised. The picture I found that matched the idea of this blog is a picture of the children being taken into the concentration camps from their parents. This picture really touches the heart, can you imagine losing track of your parents and probably not seeing them again even after you were released from your camp?

One detail in the very beginning of this book that sort of puzzled me was the use of colors to describe events. On page 12 the narrator quotes "The last time I saw her [the book thief] was red." At first, I just went with it and continued to page 14 where the narrator says, "When I recollect her, I see a long list of colors, but it's the three [red, white and black] in which I saw her in the flesh that resonate the most." I didn't exactly know how to take in this information, but my first guess was that the narrator was feeling red, as in reference to someone feeling green or sickly. Then I figured out that red meant anger, so was he angry towards her or maybe some current events? I figured out that the colors are used to symbolize different traits. When the color white is used after Liezel's brother's death, it symbolizes that he was pure, and had a kind personality. When the narrator discusses how he likes dark chocolate colored skies, it symbolizes his love of darkness and everything dark or bad in life. A song that I feel supports this thought was the song "Red" by Taylor Swift. The whole song doesn't actually describe colors and their coordinating feelings, but one line says "Loving him is red" and "Losing him is dark blue." The feelings chart inserted below actually coordinates with the song well where red symbolizes love and dark blue or purple stands for sadness. The image I chose to represent my thoughts was this color chart and the coordinating moods or feeling associated with each color.
